Life as we all know it looks a little different right now. Since most of us are spending more time at home during the current world epidemic we thought we would share a few creative and fun ways to pass the time.

FIND ACCOUNTS TO FOLLOW THAT OFFER LIVE ACTIVITIES

Such as painting classes, cooking classes, exercise classes, ect.

Our very own Anne Smith will be hosting a Yoga and Mindfulness class on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8:30 am via ZOOM.

Anne, who has her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and doctorate in Chiropractic has spent the last 20 years studying and practicing Yoga and Mediation, including Transcendental Meditation.

“Just For a Moment, Let’s Be Still” Class – 8:30am ET – Monday, Wednesday, Friday

Starting Monday March 30th.

What’s suggested to participate:

  • Ideally a yoga mat and pillow – or any hard surface is fine if you don’t have a yoga mat
  • A quiet place inside or outside your home
  • Your computer, phone or iPhone set up in a way that you can see it with volume on (You are welcome to keep your camera on or off which ever you prefer.)

PAINTING CLASS

BLR Member and artist, Andreina Bates, known as @Byandreina on Instagram has been offering LIVE and free painting classes for kids (but we also think this could be fun for adults) Be sure to follow her on Instagram to see when her next painting class takes place.

PICK UP NEW (OR OLD) HOBBIES

Painting, writing, playing an instrument, knitting, making art…these are just a few that come to mind. What is a hobby you always wanted to start but could never seem to find the time? NOW is the time! Is there an old hobby you use to love to do before life got so busy? It is the perfect time to get acquainted with new and old hobbies.

Here are a few hobbies the BLR Team Members have been enjoying:

Our Activities Manager, Hannah, has been using this time to play a game of catch with a baseball and glove. She say’s “it’s been YEARS!!!” And she is taking this opportunity to enjoy the little things in life.

Our Marketing & Design Manager, Samara, has been using this time to pick up an old hobby “I’m knitting and crocheting! I’m even occasionally ordering supplies off the Internet from small, independent businesses (while wiping all shipping boxes and contents down with a Lysol wipe or letting it sit untouched for 7 days if it’s not a wipeable material to ensure quarantine safety!).”

Our Sales and Lodging Team Member, Mason, has been using this time to try out new baking recipes. She says “I recently made homemade cinnamon rolls that were bangin’”

There are so many hobbies you can do indoors. For more inspiration click here.

LEARN A NEW SKILL OR SHARE A SKILL

Skillshare is a source that allows you to learn many different skills and you can get your first 2 months for FREE! They offer lessons in topics ranging from writing, photography, painting, business, interior design and much more.

Another way to skill share is to share the skills you already have. If there’s something you have always been able to do and could teach others, consider offering lessons via LIVES or ZOOM! Car repair, ukulele, learning a foreign language, the possibilities are endless.

*Please note that the Skillshare.com 2 month free trial is a referral link

WATCH A BROADWAY SHOW..FOR FREE!

A sliver lining during this time is that many businesses are offering entertainment for free as a way to spread light in the world. Broadway HD is offering a free 7 day trial. It’s the perfect way to feel like you are on a vacation in NYC without having to leave the comfort of your home.

SEE A CONCERT!

Many musicians are taking this time to LIVE stream from their social channels. Find your favorite artist on IG or Facebook and chances are you will be able to attend a LIVE event where they will sing and put on a great performance for you. Go follow your favorite local place to see live music. A lot of venues have been partnering with musicians to offer concerts to stream. The Orange Peel in Asheville has been doing just that.

Looking for a blast from the past? The Backstreet Boys along with many other big music names will be doing a LIVE concert on Sunday, March 29th for FREE! Tune at iHeartMedia radio stations and Fox TV; Sunday, March 29 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. PST

ESCAPE REALITY BY READING

“Keep reading its one of the most marvelous adventures that anyone can have” -Lloyd Alexander

We love that quote by Lloyed Alexander and while we are all being asked to stay home, reading is the perfect way to escape! Since Libraries are closed for the time being a good way to get access to books is by downloading reading apps. Kindle and Nook are great options. You can also pay a few dollars a month with Kindle Unlimited and get access to thousands of books. If you don’t like to read, Audible will read the books out loud to you. If you are already a library card holder see if your library offers an Ebook check out. Many Libraries are partnered with Hoopla – a digital library app.

HERE ARE A FEW READING RECOMMENDATIONS FROM BLR TEAM MEMBERS:

  • The Untamed by Michael E. Gunter with foreword by BLR owner Kevin Jones
  • The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
  • Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng (also a new series on Hulu if you prefer binge watching to reading)
  • The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henríquez
  • Maus I and II by Art Spiegelman
  • The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
  • The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod
  • The Secret by Rhonda Byrne
  • The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey

SPRING CLEANING

While you are spending more time at home why not do some Spring Cleaning and redecorating! Here is a great spring cleaning check list.

If you use this time to redecorate, consider buying your new decorations from small business and local artist, they could really use our support during these trying times.

With all the extra time on your hands you might also feel motivated to clean out your closet. It’s a great time for a refresh! These step-by-step instructions on how to “Clean out your closet for good” will help you curate your perfect closet.
